Hobson's Bay is the most northerly portion of Port Phillip Bay and is bounded by Williamstown on the western shore and Port Melbourne through to St. Kilda on the eastern shore.

Frequently the newspapers of the day would refer to Cerberus as having "left the bay". In these cases the bay refered to was Hobson's Bay and not Port Phillip Bay.
